“If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant: if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome.” - Anne Bradstreet
Anyway, this week started out looking very promising. The weather has been warming & the chances of sunshine were increasing. Both my boys made it to school Monday, despite being sick over the weekend. Things were looking up. Then the phone rang.
Yup, right around 12:30 my cell phone rang & I knew even before I picked it up that it was going to be the school. Didn't matter which school (although I was pretty sure it was the middle school about the youngest), because I knew one of my boys had been hurt. It was incredibly icy & the human males in my household have a magnetic attraction to injuries. Sure enough, it was the nurse saying that my youngest, lets call him Chicken (because I do), had slipped & hit his head.
Luckily, Chicken did not have a concussion & was able to finish out the school day. Unluckily however, he came home extremely sore & with a couple of partially swollen appendages. Apparently they sent the sixth graders out to play at lunch & the grounds were pure ice. He slipped & fell on his right side; sore wrist, sore hip, sore ribs, sore shoulder. He only told the nurse about the headache, because the other stuff he figured was from the impact. When he did start to hurt more, he didn't want to go back to the nurse because her office was full of hurt children. We gave him over the counter pain medication, ice & decided to watch him overnight.
To make a long story short (I know, I know, "too late!") the next morning we took him to the doctor first thing & he hasn't been back to school since. Yup, my poor Chicken has a hairline fracture just under the growth plate on his shoulder, a badly jammed/sprained wrist, at least two bruised ribs & much pain. The shoulder fracture unfortunately, is not one of those injuries that is really treatable.
Immobilized in a sling with a wrist brace, my Chicken is one wing down. Have I mentioned that my Chicken, like the rest of us, is right handed? Poor eleven year old boy. Do you know how hard it is to play the X-box with one hand? Plus, the Superbowl is this Sunday & he only has one hand to eat his hot wings with. Have you ever tried to eat hot wings off the bone with one hand? Not easy if you're a wing lovin' man.
Oh yeah, I also have been suffering from a severe headache since the trip to the doctor on Tuesday. Neither Chicken or I have gotten much sleep this week. However, we have been able to watch one of our favorite movies, "Despicable Me", so the week hasn't totally sucked.
And, I did get to finish one piece that I actually started a few months ago & got stuck on. I kept putting off trying to finish it, because I knew it was not going to turn out the way I wanted it to. But, I finally told myself that I needed to finish it. It actually turned out better than I expected it to, so I'll be uploading pics as soon as I take them.
Well, that's it for today's endless ramble. Oh wait! It isn't endless because in just a few short sentences, you will be reading the end of it. Yay!
Aloha kiddies!
