No, not a fat roll, although my ʻōkole (bottom) is quite ample.  *wink wink*  I'm actually talking about the whole regular blog posting.  Must be the allergies.

Warning: The following might possibly turn into an enormously long winded ramble that will only make sense to a very few.  Proceed only if you have all the time in the world.
Consider yourself warned.

Crafting for a cause...

There are many things in this life that have meaning for all of us.
Picture
Not everything that is important or meaningful to me, is important or meaningful to the guy on the corner crossing the street.  Still, there are many things that most people agree on.  Such as clean drinking water, affordable health care for everyone, freedom from persecution & finding a cure for disease.

So, it only seems natural to me that whenever possible we do the things that we can to help make these common wants/needs/desires become a reality.  I don't just mean donating money, which is the easiest solution for some, but donating time & generating awareness as well.

Sure, there are some people out there who think the best way to deal with anything is to write a check.  "Throw money at it & it will go away."  Such a sad attitude to have.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that giving money to cancer research or finding alternative ways to purify contaminated drinking water isn't helpful, but if half the people out there aren't even aware of these problems, then there are a ton of missed opportunities to help.  Make sense?

Anyway, I have wanted to do something more to support the causes/issues that I strongly support/believe in.

For instance, Breast Cancer has affected more people that I know, than you would believe.  It has hit both my mother & father's sides of my family.  Most of my friends have been affected in one way or another.  The statistics are staggering.
"In 2013, it is estimated that among U.S. women there will be:
  • 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer (includes new cases of primary breast cancer among survivors, but not recurrence of original breast cancer among survivors).
  • 64,640 new cases of in situ breast cancer (includes ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS)and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), of those, about 85 percent will be DCIS). DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer and LCIS is a condition that increases the risk of invasive breast cancer.
  • 39,620 breast cancer deaths." (http://ww5.komen.org/breastcancer/statistics.html)
                                         Also
"The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States are for 2013:
  • About 2,240 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men
  • About 410 men will die from breast cancer"

So, I have been thinking a lot about what I could do, in addition to donating money to research, donating hair for wigs, wearing a pink ribbon, clicking to fund mammograms or saving pink yogurt labels.  All of which I have been doing on a regular basis.  Still, I want to do more.

I want to do something more that shows how passionate I am about this & other causes (for lack of a better, all-encompassing word).  So, I decided to craft.

Yes, I have decided that in addition to the regular items I attempt to sell here, I will slowly be adding items to raise awareness & funds.  I will be "Crafting for a Cause".  As in, a portion of the proceeds on select items will be donated to specific charities.

I am not a very complicated person (ask my boys who will tell you my dream house need only one thing, a "girls only" bathroom) & I am quite easily entertained (just ask the friend who entertained me by eating Chili Cheese Fritos then chugging a Spicy Hot V-8).  So it is reasonable to assume that I will try to find ways to make things that I want possible.  It is my nature to want to help anyone & everyone in any way I can.  You need not know me long to realize this.

So to wrap up what has become a much longer post than I had planned.  Please take a few minutes to browse my pages.  I hope to be able to add more "cause items" on a semi-regular basis.  I also hope that my fellow crafters/artists will consider joining me.  As the saying goes, "together we can make a difference".

Aloha hugs gang,
-Clare

P.S. The wreath pictured above "Circle of Hope" is my first "Crafting for a Cause" project.  It is an idea that I have had milling around in my head for quite sometime & all previous attempts ended with me flinging myself on the floor in despair.  This is probably my tenth or eleventh attempt & I am very proud of how it turned out.
