Almost everyone loves to be hugged. Some of us love to give hugs even more than we love to get them.
Well, personally I have come up with two solutions to this problem.
The first solution can be considered instantaneous. It is basically virtual (or verbal) hugs. I mean, letting the other person know via social media, email, text message or actual conversation, that you are sending them love, support & emotional hugs despite not being able to physically do so. It is not the same as a physical hug, but can be just as comforting.
The second solution is to give them an actual inanimate hug. Instant gratification. An actual physical hug without the actual physical human contact.
Confused? Take a look.
This pic above is a "hug" that I made for the Chicken's birthday a few years ago. One of his grade school classes had made tie-dyed shirts for their end of the year field day (it's a tradition here) & though he had out grown the shirt, he couldn't bear to part with it. And my Chicken is the best hugger, so somehow (quite possibly because of something I'd seen on the internet) I came up with the idea to stuff his shirt & make him a hug.
I hand sewed most of the openings (because I have no working sewing machine) closed before stuffing it as full as possible with cotton batting. Then I finished it by sewing the last bit closed, washing it so it was nice & soft, then running it through the dryer to fluff it.
Before giving it to him I loaded it full of hugs from me. He loves it. I am quite confident that he will take it with him to college, which is as it should be.
While the "hug pillow" is (in my humble opinion) a genius idea, it is not the only form of non-physical hug you can give. For instance, a scarf or sweater can become a hug. A stuffed animal is a very popular substitute, as are blankets.
Honestly, hugs can come in many forms & can be delivered in many different ways. The most important thing about a hug is the intention behind it.
So the next time you try to hug someone, whether it's in person, via third party (social media, phone, etc) or inanimate object, make sure that the person you're giving it to knows that it is filled with love & meant explicitly for them.
And please don't ever hesitate to share your hugs. We all need all the love we can get.
