waiting for the squab...

It's 12:30 AM & I am still awake.  Why (you didn't ask)?  Well, because I am "Maum" (pronounced 'Mm-ow-mm') & my Squab is not home from work yet. Damned labor laws & seventeen year olds.  (Funny how they can pretty much work 'em like adults, but they still have a midnight curfew.)
I wanted to post something profound, because you know, I haven't, ever.  Unfortunately I am so tired I can barely keep my eyes open.

"So why not go to bed?" you ask.

I am Maum & I cannot sleep until I know my kid(s) is in for the night.

Seriously, I've nodded off before, but instantly wake up in a panic thinking hours have gone by & the kid is weeks late coming home when in fact I was asleep (literally) for less than sixty seconds.  I am Maum, I paranoid, I worry.

So, before this turns into a realllllllly looooooong thing that makes even less sense than a tuxedo wearing duck in waders, I'll post a couple of pics of one of my latest pieces.  It's kind of a recycled thing, that I am more than tickled with the (almost) finished product.

Take a close look at this first picture.  See the board under the Kamaboko?  That's what I've been working with.

Picture
***From Wikipedia: "Kamaboko is a type of cured surimi, a Japanese processed seafood product, in which various white fish are pureed, combined with additives such as MSG, formed into distinctive loaves, and then steamed until fully cooked and firm."*** It's a (lesser than SPAM) staple in Hawaiian cuisine.

After sharing an entire Kamaboko loaf with my Dad & the Squab (the Chicken is not a fan) one afternoon, I finally did what I've wanted to do for a long time, but never really had the opportunity to do.  I let the Chicken take a knife, scrape the residual fishcake off the board & completely wash & sanitize it.  In other words, NOT THROW IT AWAY!

Picture
I used my bottle of alcohol ink (appropriately named 'bottle') to completely stain the board on all sides. I doesn't show very well in the pic, but the color is a little more bluish. The Stork compared it to the green Lincoln Logs & I think it looks more like those green/blue wine bottles.

I then kinda just whatever-ed it from here on.  I don't have any good pics of it in it's current state, but will post one as soon as I do.

And with that, I leave you to watch TV & hope that the Squab gets home soon.  Honestly, I have no doubt that I will be one hundred and fifty years old, living with one of my kids & still waiting up form them to come home from work.  I'm slightly attached.

Aloha, hugs & bubbles until later,
-Clare
